Barrington Middle School
Announcing the 2017-18 Arts Alive & BMS PTO Production
A note about this year's BMS play selection
At Arts Alive! we pride ourselves on challenging your kids, but we also take age appropriateness seriously. That’s why we license “Kids” and “Jr” versions of the plays we produce. Kids and Jr versions of plays are not the same as what you see on Broadway, or what you might remember from the movies. Broadway choreography is too difficult for elementary and middle school students, so the dances are simplified. Likewise, the music is changed to accommodate young voices that cannot yet hit all the notes you hear from seasoned theatre professionals.
Kids and Jr plays are also edited with both length and age appropriateness in mind by education and theater professionals. In the same way that children are not yet ready to perform the complex choreography of a typical Broadway play, there are some themes and plot lines that they are not yet ready for either. For example, while the Broadway version of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” is based on the 1967 film, the Jr version we are producing has been adapted to current times with material appropriate for middle school students, and has a “G” rating.
We are very grateful that you trust your kids with us as they learn, develop, and hopefully build a life-long love of the performing arts.

Audition Preparation Info
We are really excited about this years BMS Production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” It is a Broadway Spectacular full of comedy, great music and an opportunity to stretch your abilities as performers. We want to give all of you the opportunity to prepare for auditions and show up with your A Game! Please read all the advice and pointers below and do your personal preparation! Most of all, have fun! This is always an awesome experience.
Arts Alive Artistic Director, Dena Davis, shares some insight into the auditioning process. Check out the video!
You will do cold readings at auditions, but you can familiarize yourself with the show by watching multiple videos on YouTube.
I recommend the Junior or HS productions – although by all means, check out the Broadway to get a taste from the pros! We will be making some edits to modernize the script!
If you want to sing solo, please prepare 30-45 seconds of one of the below songs – we need to hear range!
Girls, prepare a bit from:
- Not for the Life of Me
- Gimme Gimme
- They Don’t Know
Boys, prepare a bit from:
- What Do I Need with Love
- Speed Test (Trevor’s Graydon’s section)
Watch Melissa Costa go over some basic tap steps to get a head start on choreography and signature 1920’s moves that we’ll be teaching at the audition.
